Meditation

Does meditation bring insight or not? What is meditation? Is it a way to manufacture peace? Does peace manufacture itself? How does meditation help us? Do we misunderstand meditation?

Black cast iron pots cooking over a campfire

Meditation is like a slowly boiling pot. When we sit, for a long time nothing happens. We might be talking years or minutes. Eventually, little bubbles start to form. Maybe we start with hot water and the little bubbles start sooner.

The little bubbles start on the bottom and around the edge of the pot. It’s the percolation of air, like is attracting like, our minds chatter, the air that was in the water the whole time, we being to realize is there. It shows up.

According to the practice, we acknowledge the bubbles, and move on.

The bubbles keep on and on and on. Larger bubbles start to form. Insight seems to take the form of lots of little seemingly unrelated pieces of information coming together. It’s like creativity.

According to the practice, we acknowledge the bubbles and move on.

The whole pot starts to roil. The water is in steady motion, the large bubbles stir the water, they create momentum, little bubbles populate the edges. Things are constantly flowing.

Meditation is doing nothing with our own mental state, but provides a safe container for the neutral observation.
